PUNAKERUA HOUSE

The design of this home is a faceted geometric form that responds to the undulations in its natural cliff-top context, and sensitively nestling within it.

The design recognises the natural landscape by referring and deferring to it, maintaining the visual coherence of the landform. A strong connection with ‘land’ and ‘sea' achieves a significant cultural linkage with the interior and exterior becoming one.

Hips and valleys generate the roof, lifting and dropping in response to spaces beneath, whilst providing sunshade and shelter where required.

The house is clad with natural recessive materials – copper, concrete, and stone to acknowledge the colours and textures of the landscape. Layering and stratifying the existing landscape referenced by building form and finish.
